Cycling from Guiyang to Kunming
We started cycling from Guiyang on 22nd September 2025. From experience, I know that the dry season begins around about the end of September through to December all over China, which is why we were not expecting the soaking we received! Anyway, this was a short tour, our time was limited, the show had to go on....

The red route was our initial plan, heading South-West to Huangguoshu and then North-East through Liupanshui and onto Caihai Lake in Weining, before heading West across to Dongchuan red land. However, we were quick to change this plan due to the first days of rain and the wet outlook - we figured we needed to take the shortest route as we were likely to lose some days to rain. We really had no idea what to expect from the blue route, and I wanted to avoid the big roads if possible. After Huangguoshu, the blue route ended up taking us into the incredible Huajiang Canyon and the world's highest bridge, then South to Zhenfeng and it's pretty old town, then to Qianxinan (Xinyi) and shoirtly after, crossing into Yunnan. Apart froma. total soaking just outside Luoping, the weather improved in Yunnan. Our first stop was the friendly and chilled Luoping, followed by Luxi with a visit to Chengzi ancient village, and then onto Shilin and a quite tough final 90km onto Kunming.

The colourful hills of Dongchuan red land. A possible day trip from Kunming, but an overnight stay in Dongchuan is better seeing as it's not easy to get to.
